One more day will do it...

The model of Heather Bell now has a finished back cabin/engine 'ole with all doors shown open, hatches and runners, etc.
The cross beams and stands and the mast are all also done, but sitting safely in their relative boxes.
But the engine (a Lister JP2) and its gearbox are done (visible through the engine 'ole doors), as is the back cabin stove

One more day should do it...

  1. Very nice. We need a better class of 4mm canal boat than the current commercial offerings.

  2. Well, although this is essentially for me, James, I will let Nev of N-Drive borrow this as a pattern as he's been an excellent customer over the years, so once he's taught himself resin moulding, it will be available. I think he intends doing it in empty and full versions, with maybe a typical Nurser butty (Barlow's) to follow, so, unless you need a steel boat, you'll be able to display a decent canal diorama at last.

    1. Full hull or waterline? It would be great to have waterline versions that captured empty and full states And, much more interesting, how does it break down for moulding since it has a lot of complex shapes?

  3. Initially, full hull, James, as you see it here. The only way a boat can be shown empty is by being full hull and although not much is in the water at the fore end, there's three planks submerged right aft, so a hole in the water is needed, for which a template can be made. For a loaded boat a waterline is fine as you can't see the bottom from the top.
It breaks down as hull with all inside details like keelson, lining planks, engine beds.
Then the back cabin with its outside details will be another moulding. Then there are the detail parts, like engine, diesel tank, back cabin stove and furniture, all separate resin castings, then there are the tiny deck details in white metal. Decals for Heather Bell finish it off. I think the builder will need to bend up the swan neck from brass wire and the long and short shafts and boat hook would also be better done in that material to a template provided.

    1. Brilliant. I've not used any of Nev's products since it is years since I dabbled in OO9 but I know he cares about the end product.

  4. Nev is about to try doing it all himself at home as he has the equipment, but needs to practice. He's been messed about a bit by suppliers of resins and metal, so, he's doing it in-house. Cheaper and better for quality control. But don't expect anything till the New Year at the earliest.

  5. If this sells well, he plans to do it in 7mm scale, too.
